While 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses are for indoor sports or use with 35mm film, this new 100-400mm is far superior for nature, wildlife, portraits, daytime sports and landscapes, and anywhere you need the reach. Its performance is far better than adding a converter to a 70-200mm lens, and its zoom range is broader, too.

Canon 5DSr + Canon 35mm f/1.4 USM II at f/4 - Magnification. Clearly, the details of the eye lashes on the 5DSr from the USM II version is the most refined. Plus, Anna's baby blues just pops out in this combination.
Canon 35mm f/1.4 L vs Canon 35mm f/1.4 L II Comparison: Do you need the updated version of this lens? Canon’s update to this lens has been well received. The 35mm f/1.4 L II resolves fine details a bit sharper, which can make a significant difference in close up, detail-oriented shots.
35mm f2 IS focuses faster - very very slightly, but it does. 35mm f2 is smaller / lighter – but more plastic feeling. Wide open sharpness is about the same – both are more than sharp enough wide open as long as focus is nailed (more critical on the 1.4 for obvious reasons) 35L vignettes LESS than 35mm 2.0.
Canon 35/1.4 L II shot at f/4. bigger. Canon 35/1.4 L II shot at f/5.6. bigger. Canon 35/1.4 L II shot at f/8. bigger. Canon 35/1.4 L II shot at f/11. bigger. Canon 35/1.4 L II shot at f/16. bigger. Canon 35/1.4 L II shot at f/22. bigger. Spherochromatism performance top. Much to my pleasure, there is nearly no spherochromatism.
Canon 35mm f/1.4L II: Canon 35mm f/2.0 IS USM: Canon 35mm f/2.0: Here are some real world shots (I blurred out my family's faces). All shots at 1.4. Maybe my expectations were too high. What do you guys think, is this what should I expect from this lens? Note CA around window frames, top of boy's head and the yellow ball: Finally:
